A number of years ago my husband and I traveled to the island of Maui in the state of Hawaii.  What a beautiful location, the Pacific Ocean all around, varying in shades of greens, purples and the blue the color of my mother's eyes, very deep blue.  Enchanting place. 

We took a very famous road, a drive on the road to Hana.  These were the most tropical topical of surroundings, full of wild flowers and foliage.  And it was, unfortunately, nauseating!  I suffer a lousy malady, have all of my life, called car sickness.  Twisting and turning roads do me in.  Before I began suffering from this lousy syndrome, however, I was fortunate enough to spot a wild hibiscus growing on the side of the road.  I slipped, literally, over to it to inspect it -- the ground was all muddy.  I found it to be a beautiful site, though, and here I present it to you.  All palate knife, all the time, when it comes to oils, so you can imagine that this one took quite a while to finish!

As I have mentioned in the past, my husband is in the wine business and once in a great while we are able to travel to France or Italy.  Several years ago, we were in Amboise, France.  We were staying at a hotel that was located within walking distance of the Loire River.  I am the patient one when it comes to photography (and little else, unfortunately!).  So I perservered, waited alongside my dear love, and along came the most marvelous sunset!  Here is the end result for you, and I do think it captures the moment!

What happy names for cheerful flowers! 

Red.  Orange.  Yellow.  Even blue. 

What bright colors for these amazing little blooms.  The blue is a Himalayan poppy, hard to grow in these parts.  However, the reds and oranges are commonly seen around Fort Collins.  The orange  and yellows are reminiscent of California. 

No matter what the color, these lovely flowers make me smile.  I love, love, love to paint them.  Don't forget:  "Earth laughs in flowers!"

Although I am a Colorado native, having been born in Grand Junction, I have very fond memories of life in New Jersey.  I attended a bit of junior high school there and all of high school in Maplewood and college in South Orange.  New Jersey has "the Garden State" as its slogan and if you watch the opening shots of "The Sopranos", you might think that someone's got it all wrong, there don't appear to be many gardens on the New Jersey Turnpike!  The soil there is rich, dark, and full of good things for plants.  I have memories of picking incredible strawberries in the southern part of the state and there are even cranberry bogs down there in south Jersey. 

One plant I never appreciated until I returned to Colorado to live was the rhododendron.  The foliage is dark green and glossy, not bad to look at but somewhat nondescript, and yet the blooms are exquisite.    Rhododendron don't thrive in Colorado.  I have no idea what the growth requirements are for them but I don't think I've ever seen one growing here.  That's too bad, as the blossoms are beautiful, as I hope you'll see in my artwork, "Beautiful Rhododendron".

Sunsets are one of my specialties when it comes to painting.  Sunrises are not.  I'm a late to rise and somewhat late to bed sort of person.  I usually see sunrises either on the way to a surgery, a birth, or the airport.  I see the most spectacular sunsets all the time, living where I do.  We live right next to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, so the view is fabulous.  I can go outside in the early evening or even just peer out the window from where I paint -- and there it is, something magnificent, something I attempt to document.

The Peacock, Resident of Old Bent's Fort, Colorado, has intriqued me for years.  I first saw this resident, quite a noble creature, at Bent's Fort near La Junta, Colorado, about ten years ago.  He was strutting his stuff big time!  Oooh, love that tail!!!! 

Old Bent's Fort is an historical restoration of an actual fort here in the West.  It's dry, dusty, but sturdy.  There's an actual covered wagon out front and adobe all around.  I think it's worth the trip to see, but my daughters, aged 14 and 11 at the time, didn't agree.  Maybe next time, huh, kids? 

This is a painting on glass, full of luminiscence and vibrancy, but you should really study the close ups to see that.  A bit reminiscent of stained glass but this you simply hang on the wall to see.

I love the landscape of Utah.  One of my favorite spots is a location named The Arches.  Delicate Arch is maybe the most famous arch in this park -- lots of bright blue skies and red earth in this locale. 

I think that YOU should visit Utah!  Stay in Moab, drive on into the park -- sit and rest a while or hike around.  Bring your hiking boots for the long haul or just sneakers for a short walk.  Have fun.  This is one phenomenal country to live in, with the wide variety in the terrain and different regions.  I'm hooked!

In my neck of the woods, sometimes sunsets seem to have emotion.  This one appears angry to me -- as if it's been a tough day in Nature and it's just time to end the day for once and for all.  I'm reading into this, obviously!  But occasionally the clouds just take on a life of their own -- inexplicably, this one I read as pretty intense! 

It's all done, and I repeat, all, with palette knives.  Brushes and I cannot get along, for some reason.  I make mud with brushes!  Palette knives are easy to clean and leave purer colors.  I must own about 20 different types.

Have you ever really studied the skies just before dusk?  They can be almost mysterious, like something is "in the works".  A surprise type of dusk. 

A few years back, I noticed this phenomenon and asked around about it -- someone told me it was a "gloaming".  Sounded reasonable to me, such an odd word.  So here you have it -- I painted it in pastel -- by the way, you don't "draw" in pastel in my world, you "paint" -- I took many classes from a great pastelist, Clive Tyler, someone well on the way to fame!

 My husband has been in the fine wine business for 23 years now and we both enjoy wine at dinner.  I frequently cook food based on wine choices.  And I have been fortunate enough to go to the "wine country" here in the U.S., France, and Italy. 

Several years ago, while in France, we visited the wine country in Burgundy.  It was early autumn and harvest had begun.  The sights and smells were wonderful.  Workers, young and old, were picking the ripe fruits.  This was the first time I had witnessed the grape picking and it was busy, busy, busy, trucks laden with the fruits of wines-to-be bustling down the dirt roads of the vineyards, onto the narrow pavements of French villages, to the various wineries for crush.  There was a sense of adventure in the air.  Driving on the small dirt roads right next to the vineyards we would stop to look at the various types of grapes, see how some rows had been picked and some hadn't been yet, wondering how the determinations were made to let some grape clusters sit and others be harvested already.  All this was a mystery to me, but to some great winemaker, it was most likely common sense.  Burgundy is the home to some of the greatest wines on the planet, so there is a special sense of pride that permeates this region.  The food is magnificent, as is the wine.  We were out in the country, not in the cities, and the people that we met who lived in the surrounding areas were charming and gracious. Our time spent there was magnificent.

This is the result of that visit and I hope you can go to this region of the world sometime.  Tres magnifique!

One of my favorite places in the world is Santa Fe.  I went there for the first time when I was in my twenties.  We lived in New Jersey then, so this environment was a completely new on for me.  The adobe, the dusty and winding roads, the lack of pretense (at least back then!) captured me.  The New Mexican food is to die for!  I am totally hooked on it.  Cannot get enough! 

A couple of years ago I saw this window box loaded with flowers.  I've attempted to capture it several times and never stop having fun doing that. Red, red, red!  Why not get a bit dramatic in a sunset, call it "Rouge", and make it all shades of red?  I've seen very dramatic sunsets over the years and had fun using palette knives to put this one together on canvas.  I figure, let's not get too literal, make it just like the sky, add some drama to it!  Also, it's heavy with texture!

I've always been taken with the color cobalt blue.  This painting originated around that color.  I wanted to combine it as a pot color with a delightful little flower, the pansy.  Years ago, I owned a pressed and dried flower business and the pansies were the easiest and most reliable flowers to press.  So between one of my favorite colors for potted plants in the garden (very few true blue flowers out there, so it adds a nice touch) and one of my favorite flowers to press, voila, this painting!  An ode to color and form, if you will!

This is a sweet little iris that I found peering around some green leaves this summer, as if it were saying "hi there!".  I realize that I am giving a plant some emotion here, but somehow they look as if they have faces (pansies, especially) or moments of life to which a human can relate.  Call me philosophical (ha!).

My take on the lovely Iceland poppies, here on glass.  Remember, this is painted directly onto the glass with specially formulated paints.  A challenge it was!  They are such charming little flowers, usually lasting around a day, possibly two if I'm lucky!  I planted them in a blue planter last summer and enjoyed the show.  They're annual flowers, unlike Oriental poppies, which are perennials.  If I could grow them inside, I would!

We love to travel.  My husband and I took our kids to Venice one time.  Amazing place!  The old buildings, the canals, the boats and vaporetta (buses on water).  Come dusk, lo and behold, a glorious sunset, something I set out to capture with pastels.  A small work but with lots of heart.
