Glass Paintings

Glass Paintings

Inspired by an Italian master, I have added glass paintings to my collections.  I hope you enjoy viewing these artworks as much as I do creating them.  Painting onto glass is rewarding when it works out, devastating when it doesn't.  Patience is quite the little virtue in this venture and lots and lots of practice.  The paints themselves are specially formulated for glass (I use five to six different types).  The art works are reminiscent of stained glass but with glimmer, sheen, transparency and opacity.  Obviously I like to mix things up a bit!  Often I will "marbelize" within boundaries -- check out some of the close ups, especially on leaves -- and the glass surface facing the viewer is smooth.  The paintings are always sold framed (versus my other works, most often sold unframed!).  The reason is quite simple:  the glass is fragile ane needs protection which it receives when placed in the frame.  Ciao!
Table Jewelry

Table Jewelry

Several years ago there was a war in the Middle East -- Hezbollah and the Israelis were going at it.  I found this to be very nerve wracking, as I have a dear friend and family, some of whom I've never had the good fortune to meet, living in Israel.  I just want everybody to get along (as Rodney King, of  the L.A. riots fame has said).  To calm my nerves, I started making what I term "table jewelry" -- sea shells laden with pearls, semi-precious gems, and Swarovski crystals.  Something one might put on a table for some sparkle.  We ALL need sparkle.  Now I present them to you!
Judaica

Judaica

Judaica is a new venture for me which I have been wanting to attempt for some time.   Much of my Judaica work will be painted onto glass, some pastels, maybe a few oils.  I struggle with Hebrew (that's what I get for dropping out of Religious School early, payback!) but am working diligently at renewing my knowledge of the letters.  I love how Hebrew looks -- so old, ancient, wise!  Also, hopefully all of my works will be pretty original, as I am making a concerted effort NOT to study other artists' Jewish art -- tempted as I am!  I have set up a special blogspot specifically directed as showing these artworks consistently -- http://KarlaNolanJudaica.blogspot.com.  Feel free to drop by any time!
Landscapes - Deserts, Mountains, Water

Landscapes - Deserts, Mountains, Water

Painted in soft pastel or in oil with palette knife, occasionally adding brushes, these are the landscapes to which I love traveling.  I am particularly fond of New Mexico and Utah, for some reason -- maybe red earth and blue skies are my "thing", go figure!
Skyscapes - Sunrises, Sunsets

Skyscapes - Sunrises, Sunsets

Almost all of the skies I paint are in oil these days, often using brushes and/or palette knives.  I have more fun doing this!  Occasionally I'll whip out some soft pastels and go to it.  Anything involving skies on glass are in my glass collection -- take a peek!
Flowers and Foods

Flowers and Foods

Depending on the flower or food, I paint these in oils or pastels.  Some are obviously easier to paint than others but I have two favorite flowers -- poppies (papaveri, coquelicot) and irises.  They are such different types of flowers -- some curvier than others...and more of a challenge than others, I might add!  Enjoy!
